Very high standards of service

I REFER to your article of December 29, headlined, ''Drivers search for fair deal at garages'', in which the fees charged by various garages were examined, and would be grateful for the opportunity to clarify a few points.

Contrary to the statement that Crown Motors' Quarry Bay branch charges HK$1,800 simply to have a car inspected, I would like to point out that this amount refers to the standard labour cost for a full 60,000 kilometre service.

This service includes 53 checks, tests, adjustments and the replacement of specific parts (according to the manufacturer's routine maintenance schedule), and ensures the smooth running of the vehicle for another 40,000 km, when another service is required.

We would not necessarily charge $1,800 for repairing an oil leak. However, oil leaking from an engine can be caused by any number of reasons and often requires complicated repairs.

An accurate estimate for the repair of the car would have been obtained if the car had been left at the garage and put up on a ramp for detailed inspection. As with all major repairs, Crown Motors would then have contacted the car's owner and informed him or her of the final cost to obtain approval prior to carrying out the repair.

This is the normal procedure carried out by Crown Motors and although our prices may be slightly more expensive than back street garages, the very high standards of service, plus the warranties, that we provide are not comparable.
