Hyatt refit nears finish
THE $80 million renovation of the Hyatt Regency is nearing completion.
A hotel spokesman said the interior decoration of the ground floor and basement shopping arcades would be carried out between February 28 and March 30. With those finishing touches, two years' work to boost the hotel's image will be completed.
Hyatt's renovation programme reinforces the Regency's Family Plan theme with the addition of 12 family rooms and 50 rooms with king-size beds.
The family rooms allow children under the age of 18 to staying with parents free of charge.
In September, the Government announced a relaxation of hotel plot ratios, the space given over to hotels on a development site, which was expected to benefit newcomers only.
Although the new ordinance gives hotel operators more generous and flexible land use options, it has not triggered expansion plans from major hotel groups.
Hyatt International Hotels, which manages the Grand Hyatt and the Hyatt Regency in Hong Kong, said it had expansion plans.
The new rule classifies hotels as commercial instead of domestic sites and raises the maximum plot ratio limit to 15 times from 10.
The spokesman said the Hong Kong hotel was the only property in the group undergoing renovation.
Hyatt International operates 52 hotels and has 19 under construction.
Hyatt Hotels Corp owns 104 hotels and resorts in the United States, Canada and the Caribbean.
