IN a bid to arouse students' interest in Putonghua, three local universities have organised the first Inter-varsity Putonghua competition.

The universities involved are the City University of Hong Kong, Baptist University and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

The competition aims to enhance student communication skills in Putonghua, and encourage relations between tertiary institutions.

Contest organiser Chuen Yuk-li said all full-time undergraduate and postgraduate students could enter in either the solo or group recitations of poetry or prose.

Special prizes will be awarded for the top two performers who are not native speakers of Putonghua.

The deadline for entries is mid-February, with the finals scheduled for April 13 at City University.

Adjudicators include Professor Zhai Shiyu, a linguist at Southwest Normal University in Sichuan, and Recitation Arts Group of the Chongqing New Poetry Association chairman Wang Jianwu.
