Santa delivers day care to youngsters
UP to 70 infants will never be left home alone thanks to a day creche made possible by funds raised through Operation Santa Claus in 1994.
Yesterday, the Society for the Protection of Children opened a day-care centre in Tai Wo already catering for 43 infants up to two years old.
The annual fund-raising campaign, run by the South China Morning Post and RTHK Radio Three, raised more than $3.7 million.
The society , which provides underprivileged children with day-care facilities, runs 10 creches, 13 nurseries and one residential creche.
Its centres care for more than 2,500 children under 12 whose parents are unable to look after them.
Another day nursery will open in Fanling in April that will take in 110 children.
RTHK Radio Three chief Martin Clarke said he was delighted to see the money spent on community services.
The Operation Santa Claus Tai Wo day creche can accept 70 infants a day to be cared for by 10 child-care workers and helpers.
With three playrooms and two bedrooms, many children enjoy better facilities than they have at home, said society chief executive Ada Kwan Wai-yin.
