THE pro-China Democratic Alliance for the Betterment of Hong Kong took the side of the Government and business in yesterday's debate to amend the Protection of Wages on Insolvency Ordinance.

Spokesman Chan Kam-lam believed that good employer and employee relations fostered by the Labour Advisory Board should not be damaged.

'The situation, if it goes on, will adversely affect our fight for better worker benefits.' But four of its six members - Chan Yuen-han, Chan Wing-chan, Ngan Kam-chuen and Cheung Hon-chung - voted for the resolution by unionist Lee Cheuk-yan.

Mr Chan Kam-lam later defended the move: 'As Hong Kong is a city of capitalism, business interests should also be taken into consideration.'
