I WAS saddened to read of the uncertainty over the future of the Cenotaph in Central (South China Morning Post, February 1) and sympathise with veteran Jack Edwards' concerns over whether his comrades will be properly commemorated after the handover.
Given the inevitability of 1997, might it not be appropriate to move the Cenotaph on or before June 30 to the new British consulate in Admiralty, where appropriate members of the staff could continue the commemoration ceremony? I would suggest as alternate sites one of the two military cemeteries at either Sai Wan or Stanley (maintained at present by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission), if their equally uncertain status can be resolved.
I hope that somewhere in Hong Kong there is a spot amenable to all parties where veterans who gave their lives for all of us here today can be honoured.
