FORMER conservative media chief Ai Zhisheng is running for election to the standing committee of the CPPCC.

Mr Ai is among the eight candidates nominated.

The former minister of radio, film and television is a member of the Communist Party's Central Committee.

A leftist who prefers tight control over the country's media, Mr Ai was one of the most unpopular ministers.

His ministerial position was endorsed with low votes by the NPC in 1993. He was relieved of his duties in 1994.

Other nominees include He Guangyuan, former minister of machinery and electronics; Hu Ping, ex-director of the Special Economic Zone Office under the State Council; and Song Hanliang, former party chief of Xinjiang.

Mr He, considered to be close to President Jiang Zemin, stepped down from his post recently on reaching the retirement age of 65.

  Beijing Vice-Mayor He Luli has been nominated to become a CPPCC vice-chairman.

 Ms He is also a vice-chairman of the Revolutionary Committee of the Chinese Kuomintang, one of the so-called democratic parties in China.

A large number of the CPPCC's leaders are representatives of democratic parties and ethnic minorities in the country or are retired officials.

The conference has to follow the policies of the Communist Party, while its opinions are not always taken up by the authorities.
