Big need for foster parents

With reference to the article 'Safe haven for troubled souls' (South China Morning Post, March 5) I would like to clarify that I am merely the executive director of the Hong Kong Family Welfare Society. The chairman is Mr John Rhind.

However, I am chairman of the Holland Hostel management committee and, as your article has pointed out, the work of the staff is excellent.

I do not know if the Government has 'ignored' the needs of young people for foster care, but I do appreciate that younger children are more at risk of being institutionalised and I appreciate the greater efforts made to place them in foster homes.

There is certainly a tremendous need to recruit local parents for fostering. THOMAS J MULVEY Wan Chai
