Calligraphy showcased
WORKS of contemporary Chinese calligraphy selected from an important national calligraphy exhibition in China are on display at the Hong Kong Museum of Art.
The exhibition, which incorporates works by calligraphers from China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau, will run through to April 10.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 'Contemporary Chinese Calligraphy' Exhibition, Urban Councillor Steven Hung Chung-fun said 120 works were selected from 'The 6th National Calligraphy and Seal Carving Exhibition' held at Beijing's Chinese Art Museum at the end of last year.
He said the exhibition revealed the styles and current development of Chinese calligraphy, adding that it was also encouraging to see that a number of exhibits were by several Hong Kong calligraphers.
Mr Hung said Chinese calligraphy was a unique form of art in traditional Chinese culture.
Chinese characters, originating from pictographs, provided diverse ways of expression in the art of Chinese calligraphy through various combinations and complicated structures.
'Throughout the long history of China, Chinese characters and the styles of scripts developed and transformed continuously. In this century, calligraphers are exploring and studying calligraphy with different approaches, developing new stylistic forms and directions from the roots of tradition.' Admission to the museum is $10.
