China will soon launch dredging work on the Lancang River (the upper reach of Mekong River) on the border of China, Burma, Laos and Thailand as part of international efforts to boost shipping on the river.

According to the China Daily, the work involves demolishing a 9 km long sand dam, the last major obstacle on the 300 km river channel. The Chinese central government and Yunnan province will jointly fund the 26 million yuan (about HK$24.1 million) project, which is expected to be completed in 1998.
