A couple in Hong Kong for their daughter's wedding were in hospital last night after being hit by a falling concrete block in Jordan Road.
Swede Bernt Nilsson 56, and his Thai wife Wanlayaphol Buaphan, 44, had just had dinner with their daughter and her Hong Kong-born husband, his parents, and other family and friends.
The block measured three metres by a quarter metre. It was one of nine cantilevers supporting a building next to the Newport Theatre. Both suffered head injuries and were treated at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, with Ms Buaphan needing surgery.
A team of engineers from the Dangerous Building Section will conduct an investigation and decide today if it is safe for the public to walk past the 32-year-old building.
The bridegroom's father witnessed the incident.
'I heard a noise. When I turned around, I realised my daughter-in-law's parents were being hit. They fell on the ground with blood on their heads,' said Mr Ho.
