EXECUTIVE Councillors are expected to become more accessible with the establishment of a permanent secretariat unit to handle complaints and arrange public meetings.

Unofficial members of the Executive Council will decide in the next few months what shape the new body will take.

The decision comes one week after a new unit under the Government's council division began operation.

The two-person Exco unit will operate on an experimental basis for six months, and make recommendations for a full secretariat for the inner cabinet.

Mrs Betty Shum, press secretary for the councillors, said the unit would centralise support services to unofficial Exco members who were left without such services with the winding up of the Office of Members of the Executive and the Legislative Council.

She said the new unit differed from the Legco office because Exco members would not maintain such high profiles as their Legco colleagues.
