A political activist died yesterday, two days after he set himself on fire to protest at his party's choice of an election candidate.

Param Ram, 62, suffered 60 per cent burns in Chandigarh, which serves as the capital of two northern states, Punjab and Haryana.

He was angry the Bharatiya Janata Party ignored the proposed candidacy of Jai Ram Joshi, a local party leader, and chose another one for the Chandigarh parliamentary seat.
