Hong Kong as racist as West
I find it incredible that a Hong Kong-born man has won thousands of pounds (South China Morning Post, March 30) for taking police to task for roughing him up and calling him a 'Chink', bearing in mind this man refused to open his door and let police officers in to his home as requested.
So will all Westerners who are daily slandered as gweilos now be receiving compensation from people who openly use this racist term? The Hong Kong civil service has staff who all call Westerners gweilos.
Can we now expect the Hong Kong police to call all Westerners 'sai yan' or 'ngoi gwok yan' instead of gweilos ? No, I don't think so. While Chinese can get compensation for racist remarks made by whites in Britain, will we see the same fairness in the East? I doubt it.
Hong Kong, like the rest of Asia, is as racist as the West is. If you are not Chinese you know what I mean, if you are Indian, black, or Filipino you really know what I mean.
