Algeciras Bay aims to raise vessel traffic
Spain's Algeciras Bay port forecasts that more than 15,000 vessels a year will pass through its berths by 2000, director Jose Luis Estrada Llaquet says.
The port's strength was its traffic diversity, Mr Estrada Llaquet said.
'It is the Mediterranean's premier container port and is the leading port for passenger, roll-on roll-off cargo and transit vehicle traffic to North West Africa,' he said.
He said that the port dealt in more than just through traffic.
'The port is strongly allied to the [European] region's industrial base.
'Our liquid bulk volumes are largely determined by the performance of the Compania Espanola de Petroleos oil refinery,' he said.
The port had a total volume of about two million tonnes, he said.
