Newcastle United beat Aston Villa one-nil last night, reducing Manchester United's lead at the top of the English Premier Division to three points.

  Les Ferdinand scored in the 63rd minute in front of a packed St James' Park to increase the tension in the fight for the championship.

  United, who were six points ahead of Newcastle, lost 3-1 to Southampton on Saturday.

  Newcastle, on 70 points, still has to play four games - one more than United. Liverpool is third with 65 points and also has four to play.



Crucial win for Newcastle
