Guide to International Schools in Hong Kong

Primary schools in Hong Kong fall into one of three categories: free government schools for all children and taught in Cantonese and English, government subsidized English Schools Foundation (ESF) programs in English for students who cannot speak Chinese, and the more elite and competitive international schools with a high price tag and a lengthy waiting list. Initially dominated by expatriate students, the highest demand for spots in these elite programs now comes from wealthy local parents who want a high quality English education for their children. Here’s your school guide to these international schools in Hong Kong.

Over 100 international schools currently operate in Hong Kong and most use the International Baccalaureate (IB) system. The IB curriculum is utilized by 148 countries, and offers a rigorous education with an underlying goal of global awareness and intercultural understanding. Aimed at preparing students for top foreign universities, each international school in Hong Kong has a unique program and teaching style. The curriculum is typically English-based, with some schools including a mandatory Mandarin Chinese element. Additionally, some schools are grounded in a particular faith system, though this is not meant as a deterrent for students outside the particular religion.

Admission is highly competitive, so it is important to start the application process early. Research various school options and identify those that fit best. Some schools prioritize students with particular academic preparation, nationalities, or backgrounds and your child may have better chances at some than others. Application processes start a year in advance in the fall. Waiting lists can be 70 students long per grade level. Recognize that some of these waiting lists may seem longer than the reality since experts advise parents to apply to multiple schools. Schools look for parents that are educated, involved, and assertive so obtain a school guide, visit your top schools, and set up in-person interviews for your child as early as possible. Prepare your child for interviews and the social graces expected at an elite institution. Follow-up after your visit and continue to check-in on the process to help your child be memorable.

Tuition for international schools is often very high, ranging from HK$50,000 to over $180,000 per year. You may also be expected to pay an application fee, which can be up to half of the annual tuition and may not be refundable, depending on the school. The top schools typically sell monetary debentures that elevate an applicant’s standing during admissions. These debentures can be purchased by individuals or by businesses who desire to secure spots for the children of their employees. The monies are used for infrastructure and maintenance and are repaid without interest after the child leaves the school. Note that the purchase of a debenture may increase the odds of acceptance, but it is not a guarantee.
