Graft official gets suspended death sentence
The ex-chief of a Guangxi county legislature has received a suspended death sentence for taking bribes and embezzling public funds.
Mo Nansheng, former standing committee director of the Yongning County People's Congress, was convicted with seven others by the Nanning Municipal Intermediate People's Court.
The China News Service said last night that the group pocketed bribes and stole public funds amounting to 2.35 million yuan (about HK$2.18 million) through land sales.
Mo and Huang Chengchao, former chief of the land bureau and director of the city planning committee respectively, were also sentenced to death, also suspended for two years.
Chinese authorities have credited ordinary citizens for helping them to crack down on corruption. More than 80 per cent of the 600,000 cases dealt with in the past three years were reported by the public, with more than 10,000 people receiving awards for providing evidence of corruption.
But there were also 5,241 cases of retaliation against people who had reported alleged crimes.
