DB Schenker connects archipelago of more than 17,000 islands

Indonesia's unprecedented domestic growth and the high influx of foreign direct investments have put a trade spotlight on the country. Sharing in the limelight of this exciting development is the logistics sector, which is one of the barometers of the archipelago's industry activity.

"Indonesia's progress is clearly visible in the expansion of its manufacturing output and export orders in recent years," says Asok Kumar, CEO of Schenker Petrolog Utama.

The logistics company represents the combined force of DB Schenker's global network and the Petrolog Group's local expertise. The venture that was eventually formed in 2000 leverages four decades of co-operation. It has entered an entirely new phase since the German company's foray into the country in 1974.

According to Kumar, any company entering Indonesia cannot discount the necessity of a trusted logistics partner. "To move goods in and out of Indonesia, it is extremely important to have the right knowledge and partner from the beginning," Kumar says.

Schenker Petrolog Utama specialises in 10 sectors, among them health care, retail, chemicals, industrial and special services for the oil and gas industry. To strengthen its domestic distribution service, it opened its first multicustomer warehouse in Jakarta in 2011. Having 14 branches across the archipelago, the company is also establishing its presence in strategic areas including Batam and Balikpapan, encouraged by the growth of commercial activity in nearby islands.

With DB Schenker's global leadership in integrated logistics and its in-house customs brokerage, Schenker Petrolog Utama is able to carefully manage shipments from origin to destination points. This is matched by the group's commitment to train its staff on the highest-quality standards of health and safety.

"Whether small or oversized heavy-lift shipments, from home relocation services to fairs and exhibitions, DB Schenker and Petrolog's partnership has consistently found tailor-made solutions for its customers in any part of their supply chain," Kumar says. "This is how Schenker Petrolog Utama consolidates its market position within Indonesia's logistics sector."
