Graduates of the University of London's external programme travelled to Britain to be presented to the university's chancellor, her royal highness Princess Anne.

At the ceremony, held at The Barbican in the City of London, Princess Anne praised the students for their dedication and commitment in gaining their degrees through the external programme.

'Maintaining the University of London's high standards means that none of our graduates has had an easy time,' Princess Anne said. 'But those who studied as external students have had to learn to exercise a specially high level of self-discipline.' She also praised the graduates' families who had given the students practical and moral support throughout their studies.

The presentation ceremony, which was attended by graduates from 33 different countries, was followed by a reception at the university's Senate House, where Princess Anne met and spoke with all the guests.

'Studying as an external student meant that I had to learn more than the academic content of the course,' said one of the graduates. 'I had to learn how to organise my time, and motivate myself.

'But now I think it was worth all the hard work. I could never have afforded to go to London to take a degree as an internal student, so the external programme was the only way I could get a University of London degree.'
