New York governor George Ptaki and New Jersey governor Christine Whitman have endorsed a US$130 million plan to deepen shipping channels in New York harbour.

According to the New York Times, the plan is the latest step to try to drum up business for the harbour, which has been the dominant east coast seaport for 150 years. The commitment, however, did not address the problem of where to put millions of tonnes of dredged mud contaminated with toxic chemicals, the paper said.
