Computer power - Norway's Kvaerner Ships Equipment is leading a pan-European consortium to develop an Improved Port-Ship Interface (Ipsi) for Europe to take the shipping industry into the next century.

The project, which started on April 11, is to lower the cost of port facilities and cargo handling equipment, cargo handling technology and management-information exchange systems. It will take about 36 months to complete the project, awarded by the European Union, which will increase the use of water-borne transport, both short sea and inland waterways.
