Evergreen's new Hong Kong-Mediteranean-Europe (AME) service will begin westbound sailing from Hong Kong on May 27.

Calling at the new hub port of Gioia Tauro, Italy, in mid-June, the service will offer shippers connections between northern Europe, the east Mediterranean, Black Sea and North Africa.

The line said the AME service would provide a second string alternative to Evergreen's established round-the-world service on the competitive Far East-Indian-north Europe trade.

By calling at Gioia Tauro, it also becomes a second string to the company's Far East-Indian-Mediterranean service.

The first sailing of Evergreen's eastbound service will leave Felixstowe on June 23.

The line said there would be subsequent fortnightly sailings, with plans to improve the frequency later. At Gioia Tauro, Evergreen will take advantage of existing and new feeder service links to offer north European and Asian shippers on-carriage to various destinations, including Barcelona, Valencia, Palermo, Salerno, Naples, Civitavecchia, La Spezia, Livorno, Genoa, Fos, Piraeus and Thessaloniki.

Other destinations include Izmir, Istanbul, Mersin, Odessa, Constanza, Varna, Alexandria, Tunis, Limassol, Lattakia and Beirut.

Evergreen also is discussing with north European shippers the possibility of offering a service from north Europe to Portugal.

The carrier is to continue its slot-charter relationship with Italia on the Mediterranean-US East Coast trade following Italia's decision to participate in the Tricon service.
