KIEV: Ukrainian ecologists have denounced Mr Mikhail Gorbachev's appointment as head of a world environment movement, saying the former Soviet president's treatment of the Chernobyl disaster made him unfit for the job.

The country's two main ecological movements said that in 1986, when Mr Gorbachev ''was head of the Soviet state, he did everything in his power to play down the scale of the world's worst technological disaster''.
