SPIRITS HIGH FOR 10-YEAR MARK

CHILLY, gusty winds and occasional rain did not deter the enthusiasm of the principal, teachers and students of Yu Chun Keung Memorial College No 2 from celebrating their school's 10th Anniversary Celebration and Open Day.

More than 30 guests including Mr Hsu Show-hoo, Assistant Director of Education, attended the ceremony. Cardinal Wu Cheng-chung was also present.

Before a tour of the campus, the guests heard speeches by principal Ms Teresa Lo Mo-kit and Mr Hsu, sang hymns and witnessed a simple but momentous ribbon-cutting ceremony which marked the beginning of the school's first open day.

Mr Hsu said that ''in the past 10 years'' Hongkong had benefitted from ''great economic, science and technology, political and social changes''.

But he said such changes also led to social problems. Students living in a stable and prosperous society might lack the experience and opportunity to solve problems and to face challenges, he said.

''In this way, they do not know what to do when occasionally encountering difficulties,'' he said, adding this created ''a degree of difficulty'' for educators.

Mr Hsu praised the school not only for its academic efforts, but also for its many extra-curricular activities that enabled students to learn apart from textbooks.

The school was decorated with colourful banners which fluttered in the wind for the celebration.

In addition, there were catchy signs put up everywhere to guide visitors to the exhibition rooms.

Student projects and artwork were on display in the six first floor classrooms, along the corridor and in some special rooms like the physics and chemistry laboratories.

In the computer room on the ground floor, guests and visitors were provided with hands-on experience.

The room was continually crowded with visitors, teachers and students eager to test the computers' different software.

More than 30 display boards were also set up in the exhibition rooms by clubs and societies.

These included some academic groups like the mathematics club, science club and student tutorial group and some leisure ones such as the scouts, debate club and school road safety patrol.
