Relatives urge new inquiry into June 4 massacre
Thirty-one relatives of victims of the June 4 massacre have urged the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) to re-investigate the incident.
In a petition sent on the eve of the seventh anniversary of the Tiananmen crackdown, the relatives asked the committee to set up an independent investigation to find out the numbers of victims and the cause of their deaths.
The letter also urged the Government to punish those who were responsible for the tragedy and to compensate the relatives of the victims.
The relatives said it was important for the NPC to exercise its role of supervising the Government by investigating military suppression of the student movement. Similar petitions in the past have been ignored.
Relatives who signed the letter included Ding Zilin, Zhang Xianling , Yang Yinshan and Su Bingxian .
They have compiled a list of 150 victims, which they say represents only a minority of those who died.
