Begg so close to fairytale

Veteran Australian handler Neville Begg all but enjoyed a fairytale end to his six years in the territory when his Local Colour was run down close home by Kwacha in yesterday's opening event.

Begg, who commanded universal respect among his fellow trainers, said: 'I thought he was home when he led inside the 200-metre marker. All the same it's been a great six years. It's gone so quickly and I haven't regretted one minute of it.' Begg nominated Winning Partners as the best horse he has trained here and the International Bowl as providing him with his most enduring memories as he also part-owned this season's winner, Monopolise.

'Training and owning the winner of the International Bowl was something special. Really exciting,' he said.

'As well as that the international aspect of racing up here is fantastic. You are exposed to so much that you would otherwise miss out on in Australia.' As for a couple of horses to follow, Begg had no hesitation in nominating the Patrick Biancone-trained pair Michael's Choice and Benji.

'I wouldn't mind taking them back to Australia with me,' added Begg who will oversee some yearlings and young horses in his son's Randwick stable.
