Reminder issued on umbrellas

I refer to the letter headlined, 'Hazardous beach umbrellas', by Carolyn Lee (South China Morning Post, May 29).

It is common for beachgoers to take shelter under umbrellas to avoid excessive exposure to the sun. These umbrellas may be rented from the beach kiosks or brought along by beachgoers.

On Urban Council beaches, the contractors of beach kiosks have been reminded of the need to ensure that umbrellas rented out by them are securely fixed into the ground to ensure public safety.

Lifeguards on patrol duty at the beaches also advise beachgoers to anchor their own umbrellas securely where necessary.

The beach management will monitor the situation closely and continue its efforts to ensure the safety of beachgoers. Should Ms Lee have any further queries, she is welcome to call Olivia Chan, Amenities Manager (Hong Kong West), on 2879 5601.
