P & O Bulk Shipping Limited has secured a certificate of registration issued by the British Standards Institution (BSI) to ISO 9002 covering the provision of ocean-borne transport services for major dry-bulk commodities.

This initial phase of P & O's quality assurance system is geared to address the needs and concerns of customers as part of a programme to achieve company-wide registration with the BSI.

Mr Karl Timmermann, deputy chairman and managing director of P & O Bulk Shipping said: ''P & O Bulk Shipping is confident that, on the strength of its commitment to modern tonnage, in-house controlled fleet management and the now proven ability to provide quality service, it will remain a market leader in the business of ocean-borne transportation of bulk cargoes, in which it has been involved for almost 30 years.'' By securing this registration P & O Bulk Shipping has broken new ground to bring quality assurance into the worldwide transport of major dry-bulk raw materials.

With its modern fleet of 16 Capesize bulk carriers averaging less than five years in age, P & O bulk ships some 17 million tonnes of coal and iron ore annually around the world servicing its long-standing customers comprising leading Far Eastern and European steel mills, power generating companies and major raw material suppliers.
