Legco to close early in '97
THE last session of the Legislative Council before the handover has been fixed for June 25, 1997 - the earliest closure in recent history.
Legislative Council President Andrew Wong Wang-fat said yesterday he did not have the power to set a date beyond June 30 and declined to comment on whether he was avoiding political controversy.
Mr Wong said he would explain his rationale after a notice was issued to legislators this week.
The issue is controversial. Some legislators look to it for signs as to whether the Government is backing away from its position that Legco should serve its full four-year term.
Legco invariably sits into July - last year the final session was on July 26; this year it will be July 10.
