Handover fantasia

Pavarotti's too pricey, Copperfield's a definite maybe - Hong Kong is on the edge of its seat. Who is going to entertain the masses at the handover? Backbites polled some readers for their suggestions.

On the mega-star entertainer front, top favourites were Abba, Barry Manilow, Yanni and the Village People, with Donna Summer, Richard Clayderman and Julio Iglesias getting strong support.

One suggestion was for a prominent Canto-pop singer to perform the Sex Pistols' God Save the Queen to coincide with Chris Patten's departure into the sunset.

Another was for Andy Lau Tak-wah to do an upbeat version of the PLA march or Leon Lai Ming, left, to promote a rosy future with I Was Born in Beijing.

Wildlife was also mentioned. A reader suggested Flipper the dolphin make a surprise appearance off Chek Lap Kok.

Another suggested John Wayne Bobbit's wife cut the ribbon.
