Additional units are to be built at Stanley prison to ease overcrowding.

The Government has put forward a $941 million funding request for the redevelopment.

In a document to legislators, the Government said the population in the prison was 1,995, which was about 24 per cent over its certified accommodation for 1,609.

The Government said it was essential to provide additional accommodation to reduce the shortfall.

Major works in the project include the construction of a self-contained unit and a medium-security prison.

When the project is finished, in December 1999, there will be room for an extra 775 prisoners.

Legco's public works subcommittee will discuss the proposal next Wednesday to decide whether to recommend the finance committee to approve the funding request.

The overall prison population is 12,764, about 25 per cent above the certified level of 10,202.
