Upgrade to Nikon F series

Nikon will preview the latest release in its flagship series of 35mm cameras in Hong Kong today.

The Japanese manufacturer hopes that the F5, the latest in the F series of cameras that debuted in 1959, will recapture some of the market share lost to rival Canon since the release of the F4 in 1988, the last major upgrade to the Nikon range.

With photographers and imaging professionals experimenting with digital technology, Nikon has included a link system to PCs running Windows 95 or Macintosh-compatible PCs running System 7.1 or later to set various F5 operations.

This is achieved through a PC connecting cord but is not a true digital imaging breakthrough.

Kodak, Epson, Ricoh, Nikon and Apple Computer have entered the digital photography market with dedicated digital camera models in the past two years.

Innovations Nikon claims will put the F5 into the wish lists of leading photographers include a faster autofocus operation with five-area AF sensors and a film advance speed of eight frames per second, even with focus tracking.

Nikon has maintained full compatibility with the Nikon F lens, allowing photographers to retain equipment when upgrading.

Other features include a three-dimensional colour matrix meter.
