Mixed views on handover

Not everyone is delighted to see Hong Kong return to China next year, a poll commissioned by the South China Morning Post found.

A poll by Asian Commercial Research found 28 per cent would feel sad at midnight on June 30, next year.

Another 34 per cent had no particular feeling about the historic event.

About 38 per cent said they would feel happy at the critical moment.

The poll also found that women were distinctly less enthusiastic than men about the handover. While about 43 per cent of the men interviewed said they would be glad, only 33 per cent of women said they would.

Meanwhile, 70 per cent believed Beijing did not act in a proper manner in its detention of anti-provisional legislature delegates earlier this month. The eight delegates were not allowed to hand in a 60,000 name petition.
