Jaguars will get splash pool in new enclosure
I refer to the recent letters which have appeared in these columns concerning the jaguars at the Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Gardens (ZBG).
It has always been the Urban Council's policy to provide the best possible enclosures and healthcare for the animals and birds at the ZBG and the latest improvement is a new enclosure for the jaguars, which will be ready in October.
This will not only be much larger than the old enclosure, but has been designed to replicate, as far as possible, the natural habitat. In its construction, special attention has been paid to the landscaping of the interior with plants and rocky outcrops. Since jaguars enjoy water, a large splash pool is being provided and it is expected that with all these features the jaguars will enjoy a wider range of activities and physical exercises. The Urban Council has an on-going five-year programme to renew its enclosures at the ZBG, and concurrently other improvement works are being carried out to a number of enclosures.
Your correspondents and readers may rest assured that the council cares very much about the collection of animals at the ZBG and works with interest groups for the well-being of all its animals and birds.
Should your correspondents or any readers be interested in having a preview of the new jaguar enclosure, they are most welcome to contact the ZBG Manager, Wat Chi-chuen, at 2530 0152, and he will be pleased to take them on a conducted tour.
