A picture of the Commander British Forces Major-General Bryan Dutton has been chosen by the Chinese authorities to mark the anniversary of the founding of the People's Liberation Army.

A picture of the general alongside his mainland successor, Major-General Liu Zhenwu, has been selected by the authorities in Shenzhen to appear on a first-day postal cover to celebrate Army Day today.

General Liu paid his first visit to the territory last month.

The first-day cover features a picture of the two generals reviewing a guard of honour at the Prince of Wales barracks in Central.

The British garrison admitted surprise at finding its commander on the envelope. 'We were not consulted but we are absolutely delighted,' spokesman Roger Goodwin said.

A Xinhua (New China News Agency) spokesman said there was nothing unusual about the design.

He said it reflected the close working relationship between the British and Chinese military teams.
