The outstanding success of Lee Lai-shan (San San) in the Olympics, was no flash in the pan.

She rightly deserved a gold medal as she worked really very hard for it.

Her triumphs in 1993, then again in 1994 in the European Championships and in the Asian Championships, respectively, with a silver in both, have shown she had matured enough to enable her to be crowned with the Olympic title she had longed for.

She is now a legend in sporting history and a great celebrity. Perhaps, now Hong Kong will produce more Olympians who will show the zeal of San San and pick up more gold medals, but if they do achieve victory in the future, it will not be the Hong Kong flag which will be raised in the Olympic stadium.

Therefore what San San has done for Hong Kong cannot ever be repeated.

This means that she occupies a very special place in the hearts of all Hong Kong people and she will always be remembered.

Usually people seek rewards for their gallant deeds, however it now seems that the rewards are seeking her.

This Cheung Chau girl will enjoy many lucrative rewards from all quarters and her homecoming will be celebrated in a dazzling fashion. She is at the top of her sporting career.

She certainly deserves the red carpet welcome that awaits her on her return to Hong Kong.

Through her achievements she has set an example to Hong Kong youngsters.

Her sporting victory can illustrate to them that they are in no way inferior to their counterparts in Europe and America.

She is a source of inspiration to these young people, showing them that they should have faith in the future.

No matter how much we all do for San San, it will never compare with what she has done for Hong Kong.

I take my hat off to her. We should all be grateful to her for her wonderful achievement.
