Lee Lai-shan is free to spend her money as she pleases, Hong Kong's Olympic chief A. de O. Sales said last night.

Rejecting claims that windsurfer Lee would have to put the millions she received for her Olympic gold medal into a trust fund, Sales said: 'It is her money and she can do whatever she wants with it.

'It is not our business how she spends her money. Our only concern is that she is not exploited and that she is treated with dignity,' said Sales at a function last night where Lee received $1 million from the Hang Seng Bank and Sports Development Board incentive scheme.

'If we had to handpick a gold medallist, we could not have done a better job than Lee Lai-shan,' added Sales, who was recently awarded a PhD, Honoris Causa, in Sports Science by the US Sports Academy.

Also receiving cash prizes were table tennis players Chan Tan-lui and Chai Po-wa and swimmers Arthur Li and Mark Kwok.
