A 33 per cent rise in Tate's Cairn Tunnel tolls was endorsed by the Transport Advisory Committee yesterday.

Fees for cars and motorcycles rise by $2 to $8, minibuses and vans $3 to $13, and buses and lorries $5 to $20.

Last month the committee rejected the same proposal, saying the company should take 'more positive action' to increase revenue.

Committee chairman Dr Raymond Ho Chung-tai said members had now been given more information.

'We now understand their loan situation with banks and feel the increase is justified,' he said. 'But we still want them to provide us with their business strategy to ensure they are making efforts to increase revenue through other means.' Transport panel legislator Albert Chan Wai-yip said: 'I am very surprised by this sudden U-turn. It seems they are making a mockery of the decision-making process.' The proposal still needs Executive Council and Legislative Council approval.
