Fight for democracy helped by new blood

2-MIN READ2-MIN

A political alliance consisting of five pro-democracy Legislative Councillors and 100 social activists was born last week. It is called The Frontier and I have been elected spokesperson.

The Frontier is not a political party because our primary objective is not to scramble for seats in the Legislative Council, Municipal Councils or the District Boards.

In other words, we do not have a list of candidates whom we intend to sponsor in upcoming elections, whenever and however they may be held.

Instead The Frontier will concentrate on fighting for democracy, human rights and the rule of law. What we want is a democratic political system in which the Hong Kong people have the right to elect their government and legislature by universal and equal suffrage. The power of the Government must be curbed by a system of checks and balances.

The Frontier also intends to champion the protection of human rights, underpinned by an independent judiciary and respect for the rule of law. We think the Hong Kong people should have the right to draw up their own mini constitution, to be endorsed by a referendum.

As the Chinese Government promised in the 1984 Sino-British Joint Declaration, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region will enjoy 'a high degree of autonomy' under Deng Xiaoping's concept of one country, two systems.
