Worker fear over airport

Applications by imported workers should be speeded up so the new airport can be completed on time, says Airport Authority and Preparatory Committee member Maria Tam Wai-chu.

She said in RTHK's Letter to Hong Kong that construction work and labour requirements would peak between next month and January when 13,000 extra workers would be needed.

Although the jobs were open to locals, few had applied despite a recruitment office in Kowloon.

She called on the Government to process labour import applications in one month. They currently take three to four months.

This would require a change in government regulations and the support of legislators.

At the end of July, the airport core project had a total workforce of 28,837 of which 82 per cent were locals.
