Support of 100 vital for run at top post
Candidates for chief executive will have to be nominated by at least 100 Selection Committee members under a proposal to be put to the Preparatory Committee.
However, the proposals formulated by the committee's secretariat and to be discussed by a sub-group today or tomorrow, do not indicate whether the nominees' identity will be disclosed.
Some businessmen have said they might not nominate if their choices are revealed.
The proposal says the 400 Selection Committee members will choose the chief executive after consultation among themselves.
The candidates will have to explain their platform and answer questions from members before voting takes place at a one-day meeting.
The selection will take place within one month of the Selection Committee being established next month.
Another Preparatory Committee sub-group yesterday decided that up to 200 candidates can be nominated by the Selection Committee for the 60 provisional legislature seats.
The proposal is to be endorsed by the plenary session next month, after which Selection Committee members will make their nominations.
According to the proposal, each candidate for the provisional legislature has to be nominated by 10 Selection Committee members. Every member can nominate up to five candidates. Each nominee has to be approved by the Preparatory Committee chairman's meeting.
