Tourists' unpleasant experience
MY family and I stayed in Hongkong for a week last month and found it thrilling. We were so impressed, that we feel we can recommend it to our friends in Europe.
The night market at Temple Street and a day trip to Guangzhou were our favourites.
However, towards the end of our holiday we had an unpleasant experience. We went to a street restaurant in Causeway Bay. The waiters spoke no English and we did not speak Chinese, but even sign language, pointing at what we wanted to eat, did not work. It was clear our presence was unwelcome.
On two other tables Chinese customers were brought plate after plate of food, even though they had come after us. We only got some noodles and a fish we had not ordered.
I can understand some Chinese resenting the colonial rule of Britain, but to offend tourists in that manner will keep them away, especially after 1997.
