Photojournalist Raymond Chan Wai-man might seem an over-achiever. The 37-year-old took up photography only 10 years ago and now heads a team of 10 photographers at the 'infotainment' weekly Next Magazine.

Chan began his career as a reporter at the pro-Beijing Wen Wei Pao in the late 1970s. After 51/2 years with the newspaper, he decided to try his hand at photography.

Chan is single and lives in rural Tsuen Wan.

What's on your mind? My mind is always focused on my job. It's always working long hours in the news arena. Theoretically, we work nine hours a day. But the fact is that once you arrive at the office, you can never tell when you'll go home.

Is taking news pictures more difficult than taking entertainment pictures? In some senses it is. You have to be very fit to be a news photographer. Unlike the entertainment photographers, who mostly do their job in air-conditioned studios, we do a lot of walking and running to chase photo opportunities.
