Who said that pop stars have the personality of a road crash? Pop idol Michael Hutchence, who jetted into the territory with partner Paula Yates last weekend, gave a most illuminating insight on the difficult transition period Hong Kong will have to endure.

Speaking from the Mandarin Oriental, Hutchence said he thought this would be his last visit to Hong Kong, despite have lived in the territory for 12 years.

Commenting on the mood over the handover, he said: 'Yeah, like, it's really tense. You can, like, feel the tension.' Profound.

The pair had, incidentally, chosen the most miserable weekend in months to make a pilgrimage to Hong Kong to have their baby, Heavenly Hirani, blessed at a local Buddhist temple.
