More than 11,000 people around the world have put their names to an Internet petition condemning Japan's claim to the Islands.

The pro-China Democratic Alliance for the Betterment of Hong Kong said the collection of signatures and a strongly worded protest letter had been sent to the Prime Minister of Japan, Ryutaro Hashimoto, by electronic mail.

The letter said that the islands 'have historically been, and will always be, part of China'.

The Internet petition, which started two weeks ago, was supported by Internet users from 18 countries.

More than 7,000 signatures came from the territory, with 640 from America.
