Hill fails to clinch grand prix title

Jacques Villeneuve charged past Williams teammate Damon Hill to win the Portuguese Grand Prix last night, dashing the Briton's chance to clinch his first Formula One World Championship.

The battle between the two rivals for the world driver's title now goes down to the last race of the season, the Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka on October 13. Hill finished second in Portugal.

Hill, who held a 13-point lead going into the Portuguese race, now needs only to run sixth at Suzuka, even if Villeneuve wins.
