American President Lines (APL) has started a direct container service between Singapore and Bombay that will speed the movement of goods between India and North America, Europe and elsewhere in Asia.

Torey Presti, APL's vice-president for intra-Asia, said the service, operated with Sea Consortium, a regional feeder ship operator based in Singapore, would double APL's Bombay service frequency to twice weekly.

By providing an alternative to APL's route to Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates, the link via Singapore will improve overall transit times on many routes to and from Bombay by seven to 10 days, depending on vessel connections and origin points. The service will deploy three vessels and also increase APL's overall carrying capacity to and from India for both dry and refrigerated shipments.
