A pair of green and golden crystal lovebirds from Daum is $7,100, while a range of clocks in ornamental woodcraft made in Europe starts at $1,100.

Other choices include a Regent golf case with multi-purpose club for $2,900, a silver hip-flask at $885 or a smart crystal totem jar for lapel pins from Swarovski at $4,500.

An original, square-shaped watch from Bulgari, the Quadrato, comes in three different sizes crafted in 18-carat gold or steel. The dial is opaque black with metal numerals.

Prices start at $11,100 for the steel version and $29,500 for the gold.

The 3-ATM water-resistant watches in the Charles Jourdan 1921 range start at $2,500. They are available in steel or steel and gold and in round or rectangular form.

A model aeroplane in Swarovski crystal from Austria just four centimetres high and 7.5 cm long costs $1,100, while a tiny, five cm-long petrol wagon retails at $695.

More personal are the 18-carat gold cuff links from a selection at Alfred Dunhill.

They are in fine enamel, set with semi-precious stones, lapis lazuli, malachite, onyx and mother-of-pearl.

New styles include Tube and Dumbbell, diamond-set or oval-shaped dress links and the enamelled style of the 1930s.

Three engraved designs incorporate paisley, scrolls, barley and leaf patterns.

The Talisman Green Chinese Lacquer collection at Cristofle has an elegant money clip for $965.

Writing instruments and paper are other gift ideas for Valentine's Day. The Gatsby pen from S. T. Dupont is crafted in four finishes.

The most spectacular is hand-polished in black Chinese lacquer set with a wide shaped ring of gold bearing the hallmark and signature and 18-carat solid gold pen nib. Prices range from $1,450 to $2,900.

From Cross, a 14-carat gold pen and pencil set with a matching paper weight and ebony base retails at about $10,000.

To add a further touch of class to your gift, there is Mont Blanc exclusive writing paper.

The New Dimensions range of writing accessories includes the Miester-Butten deckle-edged paper hand-crafted in a traditional paper mill using pure spring water.

A gift box of writing paper, note cards and envelopes is available at $990 from the Mont Blanc Boutique in Pacific Place.

An agenda marker from Tiffany in sterling silver is from $285, while a half moon desk clock costs $5,600.

An even more intimate present is night wear. The HOM collection of night wear and home wear is produced in traditional and contemporary designs of bold blues, greens, red, yellow and bright pink.

For a more colourful gift, there are outrageously-patterned braces from a limited edition selling at the Swank Shop.
