Campbell to defend Masters crown

New Zealand's defending champion Michael Campbell and former British Open winner Ian Baker-Finch have been confirmed for the US$500,000 Alfred Dunhill Masters at the Hong Kong Golf Club from October 31 to November 3.

They will join a star-studded lineup that also includes South African Ernie Els and European Ryder Cup players Seve Ballesteros, Colin Montgomerie and Bernhard Langer.

Thailand's Boonchu Ruangkit, Taiwan's Hsieh Yu-shu, Samson Gimson of Singapore and Hong Kong's Dominique Boulet will lead Asia's challenge.

Campbell, 27, won the event last year at the Emeralda Golf and Country Club in Jakarta, Indonesia, with a five-shot victory over Welshman Mark Mouland and Australian Craig Parry.

Australian Baker-Finch, 35, won the British Open in 1991.

Meanwhile, Tiger Woods, the star rookie professional, is the target of this year's Hong Kong Open organisers.

Woods yesterday confirmed his participation in the Australian Open in Sydney from November 21-14.

With the Sydney tournament only two weeks before the Hong Kong Open, promoter Sports International is hoping the 20-year-old will include the territory on his sojourn.

'We have talked to his people when he was at Stanford University [as an amateur] and now that he is going to Australia we would like the challenge of trying to get him to Hong Kong,' said Sports International's Steve Feruerstein.
